Less Common but Potentially Serious Side Effects
⚠️ Pancreatitis (Rare)
- Some patients may experience pancreatic inflammation, which can cause severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.
⚠️ Gallbladder Complications
- Increased risk of gallstones or gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis).
- This is sometimes linked to rapid weight loss rather than the medication itself but remains a consideration.
⚠️ Kidney Function Changes (Rare)
- Dehydration from excessive vomiting or diarrhea may contribute to kidney injury.
- Individuals with preexisting kidney conditions should be monitored closely.
⚠️ Possible Thyroid Tumors (Animal Studies)
- Studies in rodents suggest an increased risk of thyroid C-cell tumors.
- It is unclear if this risk applies to humans, but individuals with a history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2) should avoid use.
⚠️ Diabetic Retinopathy Complications
- Rapid improvements in blood sugar may temporarily worsen diabetic retinopathy in some individuals.
- Regular eye exams and monitoring are recommended for those with preexisting eye conditions.
When to Seek Medical Advice
🚨 Seek immediate medical attention if you experience:
- Severe or persistent abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting (possible pancreatitis).
- Sudden changes in vision (especially if you have diabetic retinopathy).
- Signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue.
